Biographical Information:
Bringing faith, hope, love and mercy to human relationships is what’s needed, according to the Rev. Dr. George Langhorne, National Ministries’ Ecclesiast
Supporting American Baptist chaplains and pastoral counselors defines Langhorne’s role. “I find it rewarding to be a pastor to the men and women who are currently serving as specialized ministers,” he says. “I also enjoy guiding those who are newly called to this specialized ministry.”
The denomination offers ongoing support and career guidance, including a web-based newsletter and quarterly articles published in In Mission by Chaplaincy and Pastoral Counseling Services. “We seek to provide practical help and encouragement from the first job through retirement,” says Langhorne. He also facilitates an endorsement process for both new and current chaplains and pastoral counselors.
Having served as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy for 25 years, as well as a pastor called on for counseling, Langhorne knows the joys and challenges faced in both ministries. “This work offers wonderful opportunities to walk with people through difficult times,” he notes. “But it can be a challenge to be a presence without being weighed down by the people problems.”
Supporting those involved in direct ministry has given Langhorne a way to extend his own call to ministry. He finds Micah 6:8 to be especially meaningful, “He has showed you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”
George Langhorne is married to Virginia Langhorne.
